The longer I work in the travel business, the more I've realized there are a lot of misconceptions about what a travel advisor does and when it’s best to use one, so here’s a quick FAQ for any of you who’ve ever wondered whether a travel advisor may be right for you.
- Do travel advisors save me money?
While finding rock-bottom prices isn't our sole focus, we often secure comparable deals with added perks. Our true value lies in navigating complex travel options, and offering expert guidance. Plus, our direct links to suppliers can save you countless hours on the phone. Imagine dealing with an endless phone tree to resolve a travel issue? As a travel advisor, we have direct phone numbers, dedicated contacts to resolve problems quickly and efficiently, saving you time and frustration.
- Does using a travel advisor cost extra?
Typically, no. We're compensated by suppliers like cruise lines and hotels. Think of us as your personal travel concierge who doesn't charge a fee. However, some advisors may offer specialized services like luxury itinerary planning for an additional cost. If they do, they have to make you aware of this fee up front.
- How much do travel advisors make?
Commission varies, but it's usually between 5-15% depending on the supplier and the preferred status of the agency. It's important to note that we often don't earn commission on flights. We may book them as part of a package or as a service to streamline your travel plans.
- Is travel insurance worth it?
Absolutely! It's not just about getting your money back if plans change. Imagine travelling in a foreign country and having a medical emergency or having your flight delayed and missing your cruise ship. Who is going to pay the potentially enormous medical bills or fly you to the next port to catch up with your ship while reimbursing you for the part of your vacation you missed? The right comprehensive travel insurance can offer protection in many unforeseen circumstances (did you know that a life flight can cost $1000 per minute!?). It can also help offset trip delays, and other unforeseen events. Think of it as peace of mind for your adventure.
- Can't I just book everything online?
Sure! Some people really enjoy the research and don’t want to talk to an advisor. But consider this. You can still plan your trip details and then hand that over to us. You give us your information one time, then we handle the tedious booking process with each individual supplier, and be your go-to resource for any travel-related issues. Plus, there are many unique travel experiences that can only be booked through a travel advisor (an expedition cruise to Antarctica or a luxury sailing yacht in the Mediterranean to name a few).
In the case of many cruises and resorts, you can also book on line directly and transfer your booking to a travel advisor within 30 days. Your travel advisor can often add on perks and manage the booking if there are any problems.
So, is a travel advisor right for you? I tend to think yes (I might be a little biased). But only you can decide if you want a travel advisor to be your partner in creating unforgettable experiences.
